We have a networked HP Deskjet 6840 printer that can only be printed to if
the user is a administrator on their computer. Of course, I do not want to
make every user a local administrator on their computer if they need to print
to this printer. I have the same problem on all the computers that I have
installed HP's installation package on. Both XP and Windows 2000 do the same
thing. There is not a bare driver available, just the HP installer as of last
week.
I have contacted HP numerous times and their response was to contact
Microsoft because this was a system security problem and not their problem.
But they did give me a couple of things to try:
1. Click Start
2. Go to Printers and Faxes
3. Right Click print series
4. Click on Properties
5. Click on Security
6. Select on the User name and Check the following
a) Print
b) Manager Printer
c) Manager Documents
7. Click OK
1. Start the registry editor (regedt32.exe, not regedit.exe)
2. Move to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors
3. From the Security menu select Permissions
4. Click the Add button
5. Select "Printer Operators" and give them Full Control access. Click
OK
6. Close the registry editor
Stop and start the machine for the change to take effect.
Alternatively just stop and start the print spool service,
C:\> net stop spooler
C:\> net start spooler
Neither of which work. I have installed hundreds of HP printers using both
their drivers and installation programs and have never had this issue before.
Especially as the computers that I am installing now are brand new.
Any ideas would be appreciated!
