Its showing a paper jam, even if no paper in tray. Have checked paper path
and its clear of any debris or whatever. Beginning to think this is a
hardware malfunction somewhere. Any ideas or do it turn it into a door stop?

Any comments gladly received.

I had the same problem with a 3420 just before the warranty ran out.

I went and bought a new 3550 for less than the cost of cartridges.

I rang HP and went thru the diagostic script and they confimed that it
was dead and arranged for a replacement.

Now I have 2

With the low cost of new printers then buying a new one is probably the best
option!
I have pulled this one apart to see if I could find the problem and
discovered the following:
Paper is fed when the tray is lifted and then pulled in with the rubber
rollers. The tray lift is actuated by the
ink carriage moving to the extreme left (looking from front). Seems that the
ink carriage doesnt move far enough
over to trigger the lift and load sequence. Being an inveterate fiddler, I
am now trying to work out why the
ink carriage stopped moving far enough. For those of you still awake and/or
interested, I'll update you with
the results of my tinkering!

Thanks for taking time to reply.

Try mechanical reset ie rotate remove back cover and rotate shaft

Tried that and it turns and turns and no click occurs.

Went through all test modes. The gross fault remains that no printing
actions (ink carriage doing something useful) ever occurs. The paper is
fed and does not even slow down for a print session. Just goes through.
Green and orange light ofted flash together endlessly.

Does ANYONE have a suggestion for a replacement that has a parallel port
and will print from DOS?
