I was given a HP Desk Jet 500 with a ripped pinch wheel. The wheel is
made of a fiber that looks like felt. I need to remove the upper
part of the printer to reach and try to replace the repaired wheel.
Can anyone help?

Hi!
I was given a HP Desk Jet 500 with a ripped pinch wheel. The
wheel is made of a fiber that looks like felt.

I've worked on a few DJ/DJ500/DJ560 printers in times past and not seen
anything that looks like a wheel made of felt, so I'm not entirely sure what
you are trying to replace.

If popping the top cover off would give you enough access, just pull on it
firmly. It will come up and off of the printer. Do so carefully so you don't
break it.

To get the actual cover off the printer, there is a series of tabs around
the bottom that hold the top and bottom halves of the case together. You'll
need some bladed screwdrivers...enough to trip the tabs and then gently pry
the case up and off the printer. Be sure to remove the paper tray before
starting. Also, check for the presence of any screws. Some of the later
DeskJet printers had one or two screws in the bottom of the paper intake
tray that need to be removed. I don't know if any of the 500 series was new
enough for this or not.

Be careful when you lift the cover off. I don't recall if there is a ribbon
cable linking the front panel to the main board, or if the front panel comes
out with the cover when you lift it off.

Re-assembly is pretty much the same steps, only reversed. Press the top
cover of the printer down until it snaps, refasten any screws, put the paper
tray back and go again.

I'm trying to replace / repair the far left (as you face the
PRN) pinch wheel. It is one of three fiber (felt) wheels that are
directly under the carriage rod. The rod is what makes the pinch
wheel assembly so difficult to reach - loosen - remove.
The reason that I'm trying to salvage this dinosaur is that I
hate the thought of tossing three unused cartridges. Many thanks for
for your help and suggestions. I'll try the tabs and and other tips
over the weekend.

Be careful around the mechanicals of the paper loading assembly. It is
possible to knock this out of time and will take a long time to get it back.
The metal that the pinch wheels are mounted in looks rather flimsy, so be
careful with that too. I've never had to work with those, so I can't offer
much advice there.

I managed to disrupt the timing on a DeskJet 660CSE. It took a while to get
it back into time.

Good luck. Take your time--HP didn't make these too hard to work on.

If you can't fix it, I'd be interested in the cartridges. Post back to the
group.
