HP DeskJet 5650 turns itself off after about 20 minutes left alone. Anyone
know how to make it turn off after, say, 5 minutes of inactivity?

TIA

I do not know if it is possible, but it really is not necessary. As
soon as the printer completes the print job it goes into a low power
sleep mode automatically, where the power consumption is reduced to a
couple of watts. The difference between that and the power off state is
miniscule.

Oh Yeah

Plug the printer into a timer and have the timer go off.

Even though "housetrained" gave me a bogus answer to a post I made a few
days ago - he gave me an 800 # where he said they would have the
technical info I wanted, but the # turned out to be for a sex chat line
- I am going to give HT a good answer for the question he posted in this
thread.

Plug the printer into a WIND UP (spring wound) timer. You can get one
that is good for 6 or 12 hours, for about $10, at Home Depot or any
other hardware store. The timer will not use any current, and will keep
the printer off until the next time you need it. It will take you a
couple years to save enough electricity to pay for the timer, but after
that you will be money ahead.

That would be a really bad idea. When power is removed from the printer
it loses track of how long it has been since the last print job. When
the next print job is sent it will then do the most aggressive head
cleaning since it cannot tell when the last job was. The tiny bit of
electricity that might be saved would be offset by wasted ink and
possibly shorter printer life.

The printer should always be plugged into a live outlet and only turned
off with the printers power button.
