A friend of mine plugged the power source for an external hdd into the
ps/2 socket in the back of this laptop, causing it to shut down.

It boots and operates normally except for the lcd display. That is
getting some kind of input, because it darkens and becomes lighter
when I use the appropriate function keys. An external monitor works
fine.

My theory is that she blew out some component on her motherboard, and
the best deal will be to get another motherboard from a parts machine.
But, I'm not sure.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Right idea, may be the wrong part. Try replacing the screen. Or at
least test the screen with another machine.

THere is no telling the damage done however.
