I have a Windows 2000 Print Server in which I just added an HP Color LaserJet
4650 printer as a local printer to a Standard TCP/IP port. I downloaded the
latest PCL 6 driver from HP. It is the same driver for XP, 2000, and 2003.

I installed the printer, and shared it no problem. I printed a test page,
and was also to connect to it from another Windows 2000 Machine on the
network, and print a test page.

NOW - On my workstation an XP SP2, I attempt to connect to the printer using
the Add Printer wizard, and I browse to the printer, and as soon as I attempt
to connect to the printer, my PC hangs. If I try to install the same printer
as a local printer using a Standard TCP/IP port, I browse to the W2K/XP/W2K3
driver, it recognizes it as a PCL 6 for the 4650 color laser jet, I click
add, get to the end of the wizard, and try to print a test page, and I get an
error, "Unable to install Printer. The print processor does not exist."

On another machine that is XP SP1a, I can connect via the Network, using the
Add Printer wizard, it installs the driver, the printer appears to be
available for printing. Yet if I pull the properties and try to print a test
page, I get an error "Test Page Failed to Print" and then it wants me to try
and use the troubleshooter, which produces nothing.

I emailed HP and I am now waiting, but wanted to get a post out to see about
a couple of things.

1) You know how you can add additional drivers to the share of a printer on
the Print Server. When using a windows 2000 server as the Print Server, the
list of available OS's stops at 2000. Is there a way to tweak windows to
show an entry for XP and 2000 kind of like there is NT4.0 and 2000 as an
entry. Or a separate entry for XP all together. I suspect, but am not sure
if this is related as to why my machine hangs when attempting to install the
printer.

2) If Windows Firewall needs to be configured for the Printer to communicate
properly?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am kind of stumped on this one.

Hello,

Thanks for your post.

According to your message, I understand your main concern is to add an
additional driver for XP to the share of a printer on the Print Server.
Actually, when you view the properties in the win2k server, you will find
the entry "Windows 2000 or XP" existing. You can have a check.

To view the properties in the win2k print server:
===============================

1. Open Printers.

2. Right-click the printer you want to share, and then click Sharing.

3. On the Sharing tab, click Shared as and then type a name for the shared
printer

4. Click OK, or if you have installed additional drivers, click Close.

Figure 1 in the following article illustrates what I mentioned. Please have
a check.

Print Server Upgrade, Migration, and Interoperability
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windowsserver2003/technologies/
fileprint/psumio.mspx#EGAA

According to my experience, Windows Firewall will not affect the print
server. You can disable it to check the effect.

If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to get in touch!

Hey Frances, thanks for the link and the reply.

Here is the deal...based on that article, it looks like there SHOULD be an
entry for Windows 2000 or XP, I see what you are talking about.

HOWEVER, on my server I do not have those options. In fact I have the
following for Intel (there are other entries for Alpha, and MIPS etc
etc...side note - does it matter that this is Windows 2000 Advanced Server)

But the entries I have are as follows.
Windows 2000
Windows 95 or 98
Windows NT 3.1
Windows NT 3.5 or 3.51
Windows NT 4.0 or 2000

Based on what I was reading, there are Version 2 and Version 3 drivers, does
this mean that the XP driver requires version 3, and yet the print server is
only supporting version 2? That part started to go above my head.

In any case, I think my first issue is that I need to see if there is a way
to upgrade the Print Server to show these extra Additional Drivers at least
for XP machines.

BUT - this still does not explain why a local install on my workstation will
not allow for connecting to the printer. I will attempt to disable the
Windows Firewall and see what happens...and post another reply.

THanks
J

More Info:
Hi Frances, so here is what I've tried thus far.

Rebooted the print server, since the old tcpip port for ip .38 used to be a
different color laserjet printer.

On my own machine I attempted again to install the printer locally, with and
without the Windows Firewall enabled.

Both times this worked, and I was able to install the printer, I compared
the test page from both the Windows 2000 printer server, and my workstation
and the driver file details are exactly the same. Which means that the
driver that is installed on the print server for W2K will work for XP.

I deleted the printer locally, and tried to connect to the print server once
again as a network printer. (Windows Firewall was ON using the control panal
icon). This resulted in my machine getting hung up, I was forced to reboot.

On the second reboot, I turned the firewall off using the control panal
icon, and attempted to connect to the printer again. THIS time, I was able
to connect to the printer as is the same case on other XP machines, but only
when I attempt to print a test page, I got an error message, "failed to print
test page" and then wanted me to troubleshoot the error.

A few minutes later I try the poperties of the printer again, and then it
worked.

I deleted the printer, turned the firewall on, and then added the network
printer again with problem.

(I am going to delete the printer, reboot, and try to add the printer
again...something is really whacky here)

J

Will post update after that test.

Okay, I can now add the printer, and my machine does not hang up. This is
really wierd. Of note, the old printer that used to use the same port on the
print server, keeps showing up in my printers and folders.

Thought? - Do you think that pc's on the network need to learn the new MAC
address of the printer? And this could be causing the problems where some of
my machines are not connecting properly?

On a similar note, I went to another XP machine, and it can not attach to
the printer, it says something about a network connection...I have to look
into this some more, since from my workstation I can not connect to that
workstation with Event Viewer or Regedit...things like this....I am going to
post that on another board.

Let me know your thoughts...

Hello,

Thanks for your update.

I notice you have two main concerns. One is the entry for winXP in win2k
printer server, and the other is the errors you meet when adding printer
from winXP by "Add Printer wizard".

As for the first one, I suggest that you install the latest service pack
for Windows 2000 on your printer server. You can download them from the
following links:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1001aaf1-749f-49f4-
8010-297bd6ca33a0&DisplayLang=en

As for the second concern, I learn from your message that situations are
different with different winXPs. Has HP replied to you yet? I suspect the
errors may be related to the driver. Please give me the detailed
information about the different winXP.

In addition I suggest that you open up new thread so that we can focus on
one error in one thread. This way, we can discuss the separate situation
regarding different winXPs.

I look forward to your reply!

Best regards,

Frances He

Hey Frances,
Well, here is the deal...I really think on the whole XP thing, that there
was a learning issue, in terms of MAC addresses...by these machines...I don't
know. But thing of it is, I can now add printers to any xp machine or
whatever, and no issues have been coming up. All of this appeared to be
functional after the printer was resting on the network overnight. (HP did
reply back to me, and wanted me to download the latest drivers, and had quite
a list of things to try. As it was I started first thing by downloading the
current drivers. As part of their test they wanted me to install the printer
locally like to File, and change the port to be the Standard TCP/IP port.
But what they failed to catch in my message that I posted to them was that I
could not install the printer locally.) On my own, I resolved this, by
deleting the Port that was created. Somewhere the machine was keeping track
of the IP to the old printer, and I think was getting confused, basically
trying to send data to an IP, in which something was not matching up. After
that it worked just fine.

Weird though...what I would rather finish this discussion as, would be the
absense of the Windows 2000 or XP on my print server.

Getting back to this server, I already have SP4 for Windows 2000 installed.
My Computer Properties reports that I am Windows 2000 5.00.2195 Service Pack
4. So I am not sure if we can specifically dig a little deeping into what dll
or registry setting(s) control what is linked in that list...but something is
not correct...

THanks

Hello J,

Thanks for your follow up.

I understand now your main concern is the entry in the win2k print server.
What is the result when you add printer from a winXP computer? Can you see
the winXP entry listed?

According to my test, Windows 2k doesn't recognize the driver which is
designed for Windows XP but considers it as Windows 2000 compatible. That
is the reason why you cannot view the entry from the win2k print server.

If you want to see "Windows 2000 or XP", you can remotely manage the
Windows 2000 server from an XP client. Please follow the steps below.

1. Use UNC path to locate the printer.
Start ->run ->\\W2kservername ->Printer

2. Check the user interface.
This way, your user interface is the same as that with winXP.

Using this method it is also possible to install driver which comes with
windows XP on your Windows 2000 server.

Refer to the following article for more information.

Windows Point and Print Technical Overview
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/techinfo/overview/pointandprint.m
spx

In addition, XP uses the same driver model as Windows 2000 and Windows 2003
(level 3 user mode driver). The point "windows 2000" in Windows 2000 GUI
and the point "Windows 2000 or XP" in the winXP GUI mean the same driver
model.

If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to get in touch!
