I have the basic HP 4600. I was told by a non-HP service person that all
the duplex hardware was present in the basic machine. Looking at their
copy of the service manual, it appears that the only difference between
the 4600 and the 4600d is the main PCB (Formatter) that memory and I/O
modules plug into.

If I were to purchase the Formatter for the duplex version of the 4600,
would it turn mine into a duplex machine, or would I be wasting my money?

Color laserjet 4600 uses formater with p/n: C9660-67911, if you place a
formater from 4600DN p/n: C9661-67902 duplex will work but I am not 100%
sure.

Fantom-

That is the problem. I'm not sure either. It would be quite expensive
even at discount prices, to find that it didn't work. I was hoping
someone who dealt with printer repairs would be familiar with the
printer's model differences and might have tried it.

I know that a used HP 4600d might cost about the same as a new Formater,
but I would be left with the prospect of getting rid of the extra
printer. Those things must weight close to 100 pounds!

If you try that please post. I might try to "upgrade " my 3600 to a 3600n
that way.
