HP: Can it be refilled if you print until you run out of ink?

I have a hp 932c printer with c6578d cartridge. I heard that you can
refill them even though is sates "for single use only".
My problem is that I used up the color ink until it I ran out. Those that
mean that there is air in the cartridge and can't be refilled? I never got
any warning that I was low on ink. Does hp even do that. I had an Epson
that would always tell you the level of ink. Mainly I want to know if
running out of ink is a problem for refilling?

No, it isn't.

I've found with Canon printers it's necessary to clean the print heads if
the cartridge runs dry. I've been told to soak the print head in warm water
for 15 minutes (being careful not to get the electronics part of the
cartridge wet) and alternately to dab 3% hydrogen peroxide or isopropyl
alcohol on the head. I haven't tested this thoroughly though.

I have been told that the print head has a chip that keeps track of each
cartridge, so when you refill it the computer will still think that it is
empty. Is that correct?

Each cartridge has a unique serial number, the printers electronics
are able to remember this no. However as the printer can only retain
two serial nos at a time, by rotating cartridges you can get it to
recognise your refilled cartridge as new. At no time will the DJ-932
refuse to print because it fails to recognise a refilled cartridge as
full.

So you keep three cartridges, the one you are refilling and two
others to insert in turn to fool the printer. You still may have
trouble getting the re-filled cartridge to print properly, however
this will be for other reasons.
