HP C3180 scanning problems

I tried to use my HP C3180 scan feature for the first time yesterday,
and discovered that after hitting the scan button on the printer, the
All-in-one software opens, and the scanned object appears in the
thumbnail preview, but I can't do anything with it (it's grayed out). I
click on the "save" button and it says it's already saved, but I can't
find out where it is saved to. The documentation doesn't tell me, and I
was never allowed to choose the format or the directory. I click on
"view" and nothing happens.

I've tried to acquire the image from Microsoft Word (insert/picture/from
scanner) and it tells me "an error occurred while acquiring the image."

The printer and copier features work fine.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. I was following the instructions at the top of
page 11, which say to press the "start scan/reprint" button on the
printer in order to start a scan. There is nowhere in the HP software
that allows scanning without pressing the button on the printer.

I rebooted the computer, and things started to work better, although the
software is not terribly user friendly. (I know, I know, always reboot
the computer and try it again before asking questions on Usenet!) Using
the HP software I couldn't get a portrait scan, only a landscape scan.
I finally got my scan done correctly in Word.

Thanks for the help.
