HP c1823 cartridge leaking?

I refilled a c1823D cartridge (1st refill) and it was working perfectly when
it suddenly went dry on cyan. I would normally have expected the yellow to
go first. When I topped off the cyan it still didn't show any cyan in the
test sheet. I put it thru the initial and intermediate cleaning cycles and
then the cyan came through in a flood. In all subsequent printing tests the
blue was covering up most or all of the other colors. When I touched the
head to a paper towel the blue just came out like it was being poured.

Is this a defective head or ....? Would there be some way of correcting the
problem?

Most likely the refill hole is not an airtight seal. In order to keep
the ink from flowing out, you must seal the refill hole properly.

The color cart does not require an air-tight seal, and in fact, might not
work with an air tight seal. That's only the black cartridges. It might
be that you've inadvertently overfilled the cyan tank. Try drawing a few
ml (cc's) of ink back out. If the cyan has been pooling on the head for a
while, it might also have wicked into the other two chambers, so even
after it stops leaking, you might have to print several test pages to
flush it all out. If too much has wicked across and has migrated into the
other sponges, the contamination might be irreversible.

good luck,
Bryan

P.S. It took me three tries to get the color refill right. The black
worked the very first time.
