Hey all,

I inherited a working (or so I thought) HP 990CXI with duplexer and
can't get it to cooperate. I think the printer sat unused for a couple
of months before I got it.

Here the scoop: when you turn the printer on it begins flasing the
three lights left to right in sequence. It does this about 15 times,
and then it feeds a sheet of paper through the printer. The paper ends
up suspended on the little holders. They don't drop it to the output
tray. As soon as the paper feeds the lights quit cycling and the middle
light (Paper Feed?) begins flashing about 2 or 3 times a second.
Pressing the button will feed another sheet of paper through, but not
completly drop it into the output tray. (On my HP1220C this is the
light that flashes when the printer is out of paper.) The light
continues flashing. It will continue to feed paper all day long if you
keep pressing the button.

I found all sorts of blink patterns on the HP sight but the only
reference to this one is that the printer is out of paper or waiting
for a manual paper feed.

It doesn't matter if the printer is connected to the computer or not.
When it is connected and I try to print I just get an error that says
the print job did not complete.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

That should not make a difference.

This is a hard one. First take the duplexer off and put back the
original enclosure if you got it with the printer. Look inside and make
sure that you do not have any paper or a piece of paper jammed inside.
Read the part of the manual about paper jams. Make sure the paper is
clear. Get a different brand of 24# paper and see what happens. Other
than that you will have to call HP.

Firstly this series of printers goes through exactly the cycle that you
describe when powering on, but I am surprised that it does it so many times,
once is normal . After the sequence the ready light should come on. I am
wondering if the printer believes it has paper in it and is trying to feed it
out. (If you lose power and there is paper left in the printer, on power up the
printer will attempt to feed the paper out). There is a sensor (small plastic
arm) that detects the presence of paper right at the pick up rollers, see if
you can find it and it should move freely, you should be able to see this
without removing the covers). There may be another sensor in the duplexer but I
am not sure, not seen this model).

Sure enough, it was a tiny piece of paper stuck behind one of the
rollers. I'd looked before and didn't see it. I did try a heavier paper
and maybe when it fed it through it moved the stuck piece so I could
see it.

THANKS!!
