Without any obvious reason, my HP 840C no longer responds to print commands.
If I go into Settings, Printers and check the only printer I have (840C) ,
there are no documents in the queue, and the pause and cancel commands are
not ticked. It seems when I use the print command, nothing ios going to the
printer. I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Just remove the printer and reinstall the drivers. Most of the time
that would handle your problem.

Does the printers intenal test page work (press the resume button [the bottom
button] for about 5 seconds)?
If it prints the internal page OK then try a different parallel cable if
possible.
Also if you using XP try a system restore to a point before the problem started.
Finally, try uninstalling the printer and reinstalling it, if you are using XP
download the latest drivers from HP and use them
