HP 8270 Scanner and rft files

A client of mine uses an HP8270 scanner to scan in medical records. They
always use the "scan document" option in the HP Director utility, then save
as a rich text file. Then they view the files in Notepad.

About two weeks ago, the scanned/saved rtf documents stopped rendering in
Notepad. Notepad would open the file, but the page would be blank. I
noticed that the blinking cursor was unusually small. I don't know what to
make of that.

To troubleshoot, I changed rtf file association in Windows to Word, and the
files seem to render properly.

What is going on here? Is there something different about the way HP
Director is scanning/saving rtf files, or is Wordpad corrupt?

Thank you,

jm

Try saving the DOC file in Word as a RTF. Then try opening with WordPad.
Notepad does not do RTF files. Notepad only does .txt files.

The correct association for RTF files is either Microsoft Word or WordPad.
