Hi all...... I'm thinking about buying this printer and I'm wondering if
refilling the cartridges presents a problem. Do HP put chips in the
cartridges or do something with the driver to prevent this?

I'm in the process of experimenting with refills in my deskjet 9800. All HP
ikjets (except the DesignJets) use carts with built-in printheads. No
problems so far, but I'm still on my first refill. I believe the carts are
chipped but you can usually get around error messages that indicate the
carts are less than full. One trick involves swapping carts several times,
IIRC. Google on HP chip resetting. Future plans for my 9800 include
refilling empty color carts with MIS pigmented black inks for B&W printing.

I asked Bob Headrick of HP, who posts regularly to questions on this group,
whether the printheads were only good for one or two refills. He indicated
the heads are durable enough to be reused more than twice, but other
variables besides printhead durability could affect cartridge reuse. I have
that info on another PC at present, and will try to post it later today.

It seems Canon and Epson users have an advantage here, since aftermarket
cartridges can be purchased inexpensively for many of their printers. I have
not found any for HP printers.

However, MIS are in the process of developing a continuous inking system for
seleect HP printers, so I guess anything is possible. If they pull it off,
I'll be one of the first customers.

BTW, do you have a newfie, Newfdog?
