HP 7110: Insert ink cartridge NOW ...

I have an HP 7110 which just ran out of black ink. When I inserted the new
cartridge (a genuine HP cartridge) it says "Insert ink cartridge NOW to
prevent damaging the product". I even tried a second new cartridge and it
gives me the same message. When I put the old cartridge back in the printer
it says that it is out of ink.

Any ideas?

I assume this printer is under warranty, if you have tried 2 new cartrdiges
then you would be well advised to ask for warranty repair or replacement.
