HP 690c not recognising colour cartridges

A friend of mine asked me to look at his printer, as the orange resume light
keeps flashing. He has tried two brand new HP tricolour cartridges, but the
printer refuses to acknowledge its existence! I have tried cleaning the
contacts etc., but whenever I go to align the cartridge, it says its not
installed. The printer communicates with the PC OK, but I'm at a loss.
Also, how the hell do you take off the outer casing to get to the innards?
There seems to be no screwfixings.
Thanks
John

Good luck. I'm having the same types of problems with my HP950c, but
it only happens when I use refilled or remanufactured cartridges: (1)
the cartridge contacts are clean (2) the ink tanks are full, but (3) I
get the same orange lights. On the other hand, the printer works fine
with new cartridges.

There must be some setting on the HP's that are sensitive to ink level
or dirty contacts - whether it is aimed at preventing use of
remanufactured cartridges, I don't know, but it certainly is a pain in
the rear end.

Thanks Steve - glad to hear I'm not alone!
