I have windows xp pro with service pack. I set up my
printer and I can't get it to print anything. I went
through the whole trouble shooter with no results and
also to HP's web site and went through everything there
that I could find, still with no results. Can you please
tell me what the problem is? My message always reads the
same no matter where I try to print from. Document failed
to print. Thank you in advance for anyone who can help me.

Delete the printer. Download the XP drivers from HP.
Install the software, then install the printer when the
software install says to do so.

Are you using USB or parallel (USB recommended)?

I already tried that and hp says windows xp has the
right driver for my printer. I am using parallel. I also
tried using a different cable with no results. I dont
have a usb cable for my printer. Any other suggestions
short of buying a new printer?

Hi, Madison.

Is your parallel port activated in the computer BIOS? Does it show up in
your WinXP Device Manager under Ports (COM and LPT)? My LaserJet 5L is
connected via parallel port on "ECP Printer Port (LPT1)" and works fine.

If the printer, cable, and port are all working, there's no reason it
shouldn't work in XP. Have you tried the printer on another computer to
confirm that it's still working? Are you sure the cable is good?

If the printer does work, there could be a problem with your LPT port,
either the settings its using, or the port itself. You could try another
device on the port and see if it works.

Check the documentation on the printer to see how that port is supposed to
be set.

If all the hardware checks out, then it has to be something in the driver
install that's gone wrong. I've found that sometimes if you mess that up the
first time around, it gets trickier trying to get it to work. And HPs have
very specific instructions as to how you're supposed to install. If you
don't follow those instructions precisely, things can go wrong.

You could go buy another printer, but if it's a port problem, a new one
isn't going to work any better. If it's an installation problem, you're
wasting money buying a new printer, and you might have the same problems
installing the new software as well.

Your best option might be to have someone who understands troubleshooting
take a look at your computer and see what's going on.
