HP 5N network problems

I bought a used HP 5N, and attached to my home network via ethernet. I
want to use it as a network printer for both XP machines and Linux
machines. I've verified it prints by connecting it by parallel and
printing. I connected an ethernet cable to it, and set up the IP
address (192.168.0.10), gateway, mask etc through the front panel menu.
I printed a test page to verify settings. I can ping the printer and
get a response. I can telnet to it and manually print through telnet.
I went into control panel in XP and tried to set it up as a network
printer with the add printer wizard but it says it cannot find the
printer. I downloaded the HP 'Install network printer' wizard, and ran
that but it still cannot find the printer. The firmware version is
A.05.05. I also tried connecting to the internal print server on the
Jet Direct card by typing in the IP in a browser, but it says the
connection is rejected. I am at a loss at this point as to what to do.
It seems to me the jet direct card is working or I wouldn't be able to
get a response when pinging and telnetting. It also seems the printer
components must be working as I can print test prints etc with
parallel. So why can't XP recognize the printer exists over the
network? I haven't delved into the linux side yet. Anybody have any
suggestions? I spent my entire evening surfing for answers. Any help
would be appreciated. Thanks.

The only thing I can suggest is a Cold Reset of the printer. This may clear any
unusual settings that may have been used in the printer's previous life.
This is done by holding down the "GO" key while powering on the printer, the
message "Cold Reset" should appear followed a little later by "00 Ready".
You should do this with the network card installed in the printer and it will
reset all the network settings to factory defaults, so you will need to set the
IP, Subnet Mask and Gateway addresses again.
I have learnt that this is worthwhile when installing second hand network
printers in new networks.
Failing that, try Bob Headrick's suggestions.
Good luck

Here is a bit I wrote on the easiest way to do this:

http://groups.google.com/group/comp.periphs.printers/msg/850d68c775d43f25
that but it still cannot find the printer. The firmware version is

Only the later JetDirects have a web server, I can't recall seeing it in
an MIO JetDirect at all.

Agreed. Maybe the protocol you are trying to use has been disabled in
the JetDirect. Telnet to it and type a slash (/) and press enter to see
the current settings. Post them here if you can.

Looks okay, although it may be a very old firmware version. Seems like
what is showing as "Novell" here usually is "IPX/SPX".

Try setting Windows to use lpr/lpd rather than port 9100 communications.

Thanks for the help. I got it up and running. Your previous message's
link (on the easiest way to do this) filled in the missing pieces. Who
would have thought that if I want to add a printer on my network, I
have to choose "add a local printer" in the "add printer" wizard
instead of the more obvious choice of "add a printer on my network"?
Anyway, thanks for the help everyone.
