I bought a used HP colorjet 5M printer. It was supposedly working fine (that's
what the seller told me - and he is absolutely sure...worked great...printed
fine...nice color resolution...printed a test page prior to shipment to prove
it etc..).

It got to me and the printer does not initialize. It starts up, goes through
the routine of doing the memory count, but then right after gives the 54.4
engine error.

I looked on the HP forum where some people had said to make sure the metal tab
located on the right side of the printer drum to be perpendicular to the frame
etc..., I straightened it out as best, but that does not resolve the problem.
I can't get any further to let it print even a test page.

Can someone please help.

Thanks in advance for your response.

You may have a fairly serious problem. The 54.4 error message has
nothing to do with the printer drum. It could be a cam timing issue,
the gears driving the cam may be worn or the teeth stripped, or one of
the boards may be bad. Take it into a service center for repairs. Be
warned though, this could be expensive. Better yet, try to get your
money back on this one, I think you got taken.
