I just bought a new 1012 for $199 at MicroCenter to replace the 5L. It
was even cheaper at Staples.
The 5L was on the second or third set of rollers, and to replace them
would have been at least $100 for parts and labor, unless you do the
labor yourself. Also, some paper had gotten jammed in the fuser, and to
get that done at the shop -- the area is not user accessible -- would
possibly have been another $100. Both of these items, which recur every
couple of years made the 1012 seem like the more economical route.
Except for one thing -- the 1012 is USB only, so I had to buy a USB
print server for our home LAN, about $80 for a Hawking.
Moreover, the 5L was kind of brain defective. It was the first HP entry
level laser printer, and seems to have some software shortcomings.
There were some things it would not print like hyperlinks.
All in all, it seemed to me that having it repaired was throwing good
money after bad. If you don't have an USB port, you might look at the
1015. It is a little faster, more memory, and both USB and parallel
ports. I am not sure about the cost, but it is undoubtedly more.
Hello everyone,
I have a HP 5L laserjet printer and recently encountered many problems
during printing. The paper won't get pulled in, so I need to push it
slightly to make it work. Other than that, it sometimes take in 2-3 papers
at the same time.
I use regular laserjet quality papers, so I believe the problem is not with
the paper.
Does anyone notice the same problem? any remedy suggestion?
