HP 5000 paper feed problems

My HP 5000N has started having problems with paper feeds from tray 2.
Sometimes it even manages to get 4 or 5 sheets in one go! I've tried turning
the stack of paper upside down and rotating through 180 degrees but this
didn't help. The little rubber pad at the front of the paper tray is very
shiny and I was wondering if this is the cause of the problem, and if so, is
there any way of rejuvenating it? Or perhaps the cause is elsewhere?

The parts are very inexpensive, just get new parts there easy to
replace.
