Folks, has anyone had this happen with an HP 4L?

It fires up OK, but then the paper hangs up , over on the left side
where the rollers, etc. are located. Happened very suddenly!!

If you had that problem, did you think it worth the repair expense?

I'm in the LA area, and was quoted over the phone $30-$50
for rollers (if that's what the problem is), and $85 labor.

That brings it nearly to the $150 the place is quoting for a
refurbished 6L.

My 4L and I have been together so long, I feel like I'm
abandoning a child if I get something else!

Also, I don't know anything about the 6L.

My usage is fairly low, home computer.

Would sure appreciate any of your experienced input
about

(a) the specific problem with the 4L

(b) did you think it worth repair

(c) or what did you buy next (assuming low home use like mine)

Many thanks in advance.

clip....

Have you removed the plastic feed cover, it's in the front of where
the tone cartridge goes. It is removed by removing the one screw then
sliding the assembly to the back of the printer and lifting out.
inspected for paper stuck there.

It's worth looking inside the printer.
You might find a foreign object, hopefully not a sticky label.

Thanks to both good folks who replied. Appreciate your suggestions.

I did open it to inspect. Not a foreign object or
sticky label or paper stuck back there. Pretty much a roller, etc.
wear and tear problem.

Decided that it would be too expensive to repair,
so bought a refurbished 6L. Hope it will give me somewhere
near the many years of service like my faithful old 4L.

R.I.P. dear 4L!

Thanks again,folks.

You can order the parts, from http://www.printerworks.com/ or a kit
from http://fixyourownprinter.com/

It should not cost all that much and about one to two hours of your
time.

Hey, thanks for those sites! Who knew? Fascinating to see the
diagrams and diagnoses. Dunno if I would have been up to the job,
but at least I know that DIY help is available. One site asked
$199 plus shipping for the 6L, but I paid $150 plus tax at local shop,
or $167.00. Only 60 days warranty, but they say if something is going
to go wrong, it will right away. Knock on wood...

Appreciate your input!

You should know that the 6L has a paper feed problem when the sub pads
and seperator pad wear out. It will try to feed all the paper in the
paper tray. Do not get the free fix as the printer after a little
will try to feed the fix though the printer. I order from
www.partsnow.com but I call them to order the parts and they do have a
$50 US mim. order. I like them much better than www.printerworks.com
the prices are close to the same.

Damn, damn, damn!

I hope it doesn't happen soon-- or rather, hope it happens within the
60 day warranty.

I don't understand "free fix". Could not find it on their site.
Could you explain, pls? Thanks.

You're obviously somebody who works on these machines
and knows all their inside guts! Lucky me to get the advice.
