Hello,

I am shopping for scanners and I'm very intruiged by HP's 4600. It seems
like it would be great for scanning oversize items like big books of sheet
music.

I am worried about the speed, though. Can't get any data on it.
Can anybody clock a 8.5 X 11 page at 300dpi, black & white for me?

Thanks,

You might want to avoid this scanner Dave. While cool to look at and quite
fast at 300 dpi, the image quality is lacking, and I am about to RMA my 3rd
one because of a banding problem with the finished scan on darker images.
Tech support says its faulty hardware.

I would get another model, but, the supplier can't do that, so, we just keep
on shipping them back and forth. Good thing I get a great rate on shipping
cross-country. One of these days I hope to "luck-out" and get a good one.

Dave,
had one here (4670) for evaluation but returned it to the store because of
the banding problems Elp mentioned already. Scan speed was not so bad and
the scanner is really quite in compare to a Canon Lide f.e.
And yes it looks great. But the image quality is not acceptable. Beside the
banding, the color was totally off and there is not way to correct this with
a custom color profile, as HPs scan software does not allow for the use of
color profiles at all.
Concerning the bundled software for stitching scanned oversize items (for me
as well an argument to evaluate this scanner): It works for small to medium
files. But I tried to stitch two 300 dpi RGB A4 scans and the program went
to Nirwana twice without producing any output.

This thing isn't ready yet.

My strong advice: If you really want to give it a try, buy it somewhere
where you have the option to return it within a few days, even if its not
the cheapest price on the planet. Gives you a more comfortable sleep ;)

Greetings Peter

Are those of you who have the banding problem getting it consistently? I
mean under some consistent set of conditions, not every time? I did the
self-test that HP tech support recommended to "cure" the problem with mine,
and it didn't go away--but it comes and goes in a semi-random fashion. When
I scanned the same page in a book 5 times in a row, I got three badly-
banded out-of-focus scans, followed by two perfect ones. Then it was okay
a few times, and then the banding showed up on a copy of an ordinary printed
page (no dark areas in it at all.) But whenever I try to reproduce the
problem (even using deliberately dark images), it works fine...

As far as I remember it was inconsistent. The banding was more
noticeable on light grey areas (clouds) than on very dark ones.
