To understand the mechanism, you should remove the external adhesive label.
This don't ruin the cartridge at all.

does have anybody figure out how this green/black label work?

Surprisingly simple.

There is a black strip with a square cutout, and a green paper strip.
One end of each strip is connected to the mylar bag that holds the ink.
When full, the green shows through the cutout. As ink is used, the mylar
bag shrinks and pulls the strips. This causes the black cutout to slowly
move to the left, and the edge starts blocking the green behind it.
