You don't give enough information for anyone to give you a good diagnosis,
but if you are trying to scan film (or mistakenly have the software set up
to scan film instead of reflective) and there is an insert in the lid of the
scanner, have you taken that out? That is a common thing for people to
forget about with other scanner models.

thanks for the reply.........This scanner is about 10 years old and
has been my wife's favorite because of it's simple and convenient
operation. No fancy options...just what she wants. It does not scan
film.I have other scanners for that (Canon).
The only problems she has had is that 2 power supplies failed over the
years. The last one just last week.(purchased from HP)
I have updated the software and drivers although the last update
available is circa 2002. I have run through all the software scanning
options and tried it on 3 of our XP boxes. No joy! Also ran thru the
troubleshooting steps from the HP website.
The scan process starts and completes correctly..warmup, scan (lite IS
on during scan), and carriage returns home (no lock on this model).
But no scanned image......just a black/blue overall ....just like the
lens was blocked (it isn't) or not recorded by the software.
