Hi,

I've just bought a HP Color Laserjet 3600. I've found a Network port (under
a white sticker) just where the CLJ 3600n should have its port. My computer
successfully autonegotiates to 10Mbit half duplex, and there is a Realtek
8139 chip on the printers mainboard. Any Idea whats the difference to the
3600n (excpet firmware ;)? Or even better: Idea how convert it to a 3600n?

regards
Alex

Is there such a thing as a plain 3600? I can't find a reference to it
anywhere.

So far as I know James is correct, I believe all LJ3600 printers are network
capable, are you saying you have used the port and it works? If so, I guess
that is the answer.
Tony?

Hm. I have one ;) No direct reference on hp.com. I the german version there
is one, though:

If you search for it under support, it is listed, too:
http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Look...ery=color+laserjet+3600&submit.x=0&submit.y=0
directing you to:

strange,uh?

Well, link is ok, but no network activity, and I cannot configure the tcpip
part in the printers menu.

What is the product code of the printer (Model number stamped on the compliance
plate) it will be something like Q5986A. Please advise and I will see if I can
dig anything up.

It reads Q5986A yep. The printer addtionally prints that it is:
DC-Controller 30.77, serialnumber CNSFC05618, Formatnumber DP23131,
firmware 3.002.4
The CD is labeled as Q5987-60102 V.1.0AM

OK, the 3600 comes in 3 different versions -
3600 (part number Q5986A) basic version, only available in selected
countries
3600n (part number Q5987A) network version
3600dn (part number Q5988A) network version + duplexing

The only network options available for the 3600 seem to be external
print servers, HP and the trade websites I looked at didn't have any
other upgrade options. That's not to say there may be some hack out
there that will do what you want, I just don't know enough about these
printers.

It seems the correct print server is

J7934A
HP 620n Ethernet Print Server

Alex I suggest you ask an HP dealer if this will work with your printer and get
them to price it for you.

Well, yes that might work. But I had bought a 3600n (Q5987A) in the first
place if I really needed network. However it *has* the hardware for network
connections, so there might be some hack to get the software to use it.
Thats basically what I'm looking for.

I guess the telling fact is that you can't configure the network in the
printer. That almost certainly indicates that the TCP/IP portion is disabled in
the firmware. (I assume you have looked in the "Configure Device" (or similar)
menu and there is no EIO configuration option). I know of no way to
update/change the firmware on this printer (it is too new and I have no
experience of the model). Replacing the formatter board with a 3600n formatter
would probably work, but at a very high cost.
