No matter what I have tried in terms of driver installs
or uninstalls, with or without the updated software from
HP I cannot get the scanner to work with XP
Professional. It worked before an upgrade from ME and
will work on another PC that we have running XP, so I am
confident that it is a driver issue. If I install the
software in Safe Mode, the software itself will work
without the scanner. I have tried several workarounds
from HP, but all to no avail. Does anyone have any
suggestions? I am using the sj650en.exe software and
driver package from HP which is supposed to be the latest
available software and XP compatible. I have tried in
regular or compatible mode with the software and no
luck. When I try to start the Precision Scan LT it just
hangs and goes nowhere. Same with the Copy software.

Correction. The second computer has ME not XP. The
scanner software just acts as if it is trying to open but
is in some sort of "never ending loop" that never
finishes. The only way to get the opening screen to
disappear is to go into Task Manager and "end the
process". Thanks again for any suggestions.

I have the same scanner and XP Pro. At times when moving USB devices to
different ports I have had a hard time getting the 3300c to work. The best
troubleshooting advice is on this link:

follow the suggestions you'll get the scanner working. Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion. I went to the website and
printed off the instructions. These are very much the
same as the instructions I received from HP via the web
and still no luck. The difference was the renaming of
the Twain_32 folder. I had my fingers crossed that this
would do the trick, but it didn't. For some reason, the
scanner just won't initialize after trying everything.
Is there anything "administratively" with XP Professional
that I might have done inadvertantly that would cause the
scanner not to function properly. All the USB devices,
scanner, etc. all show OK in Control Panel, but the HP
3300C will not start scanning or copying. If you have
any other suggestions, I would appreciate it. Thanks
again for trying to help me.

Are you setting this up in a limited user account? HP
scanner software can be picky about working in an account
with limited users if it was installed from a different
admin account, Make the limited account an admin acct ,
install the scanner and use it. Then put the account back
to limited.

The last time I tried getting the scanner set up with XP it took me quite a
few tries. No matter what I did it would not work. Finally I tried Device
Manager, Imaging devices, Hp SJ 3300c, right click on it, select Update
driver. When the wizard starts , select Install from a list or specific
location (Advanced). Point to the location where the unpacked sj650
software is located and when the Compatibilty window shows up hit Continue
anyway. After restart the PC. This might take a few tries but at the end it
does work. My 3300c has been working everytime for over a month now.

.
I have tried and tried and no luck. I even tried
redownloading the sj650en.exe and no luck. Not sure what
I could try next. I do know that the software itself
appears to work if there is no scanner. But as soon as I
try to load the drivers, then the software locks up with
the opening window. And that is as far as it gets. I'm
starting to think that the 3300C is only marginally
compatible with XP Professional. But, thanks any way.

I know your frustration because it happened to me. I also have XP Pro and
swore never to buy HP products again because of this same issue. It took me
a lot of tries to get the 3300c to work.
Uninstall the software and scanner as per the HP instructions including
cleaning the registry (making sure that all PID_0205 in all USB entries are
deleted in case you switched USB ports), the installation folders and the
Twain files. Unplug the scanner's power supply. Reboot the PC. Install the
PrecisionScan software. Restart. Plug in the power to the scanner. When the
Hardware detected window shows that the scanner is found and installs the
drivers, restart again. Before you use the scanning software do the driver
upgrade. Now you should be able to use the scanner. It's a lot of
contortions to go through to get the scanner to work.

I am going to try again as you suggest, although I must
admit to a maximum degree of frustration. I do have one
question. I have gone the route of cleaning the registry
according to the instructions given by HP before. I also
found a VID_0000&PID_0000 USB folder under
HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG / Enum / USB. Do you know if that
should be removed also? I have removed any PID_0205
entries when clearing the registry of HP remnants. If
the PID_0000 entry is found in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE it
is supposed to be deleted.

I have 5 folders under Hewlett Packard in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / Software. They are:
BOD
HP PrecisionScan LT
HPF
ImageServer
ScanJet
How much of this should I delete? The HPF contains what
appears to be the code for my printer (I have an HP 722C)
and I would assume that I need to leave that well enough
alone.

The other question I have is which driver should I let XP
install the first time, the one with oem or the 3300
one. Should I load the OEM first and then the 3300.inf
which appears to have a newer date on it? I have been
trying to diligently follow all directions in this
process and so far no luck. At least everything else
remains functional, but this has really used up a lot of
my time.

Amazing, I also have the HP 722c printer. That VID_0000&PID_0000 must be an
unknown USB device so remove it. As far as the folders under HP,
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / Software I only have three: BOD, HP PrecisionScan LT,
ScanJet. I would only remove Scanjet registry keys by following
http://h20015.www2.hp.com/hub_search/document.jhtml?docName=bps03850 The OEM
is the driver that came with XP. The 3300.inf is HP's updated driver. Always
install the updated driver.
I've been fighting this thing since Jan. 2002 after upgrading from ME to XP
Pro. Does your printer work as it is set-up? Another thing that happened in
this upgrade was that the 722c lost some of it's functions, for example
double sided printing. This was because HP never provided an upgrade to the
printer software. My printer shows up in the registry under Microsoft
software and the XP printer driver only supports basic printing features.
This is another reason why I'm getting away from HP equipment, they don't
support their products in full.
