I recently bought an HP All-in-One 2610 printer/scanner/copier/fax that
has
built-in wired ethernet.
I have a network at home in which my desktop and my laptop are wired
through a Netgear wireless firewall router.
I hard-wired the HP 2610 to the router via ethernet cable and then went
on to
install the software for the HP onto the desktop. The software seemed
to install effortlessly in about 10-15 minutes.
But...I've run into a problem on my desktop now (Windows
XP SP 2 with IE 6.0): after opening the browser, the status on the
lower
right hand corner of the browser window reports "local intranet"
instead of
what it used to say, "internet" or, sometimes, "unknown zone."
Additionally,
surfing seems to be "broken." That is, if I type an address in the
address
bar of IE, the little flag starts to wave, but it takes almost a minute
to
get to the web page I've entered. I don't get any kind of message that
the
web page is not found or anything like that, it just takes forever.
But, it gets even weirder: if, on the other hand, I type in the address
in
the google search bar just below the address bar, it goes directly to
that
web page in a split second, without any problems. But, IE still reports
it as
"local intranet" instead of "internet."
As you can tell, I'm thoroughly confused. Why would the address bar not
work, but the google search bar work fine? Why can't I get IE to report
the
zone as "internet" instead of "local intranet?"
I've tried checking all the settings w/in IE to see if something got
changed
during the HP install, but it's nothing seems to have and I even reset
the default settings in the browser just for god measure.
Anyway, I think the HP software install did something while it was
configuring itself to be able to connect to the network, but I just
don't
know what it did.
I've checked the system event log and the following entries keep
appearing around the time I try the web.
