HP 2605 printer annoyance

I can't seem to find a newsgroup that covers HP printers, so has
anyone out there got a 2605 Colour Laserjet? Mine is three years old
and therefore not in warranty, but is used sparingly, so the three HP
colour cartridges are showing over 60% toner left. However, the red
one has been getting fainter over the past few months and now won't
work. I've tried the cleaning, taking out and shaking routines, but
it won't clear and HP diagnostics only cover the case where the
cartridge must be empty not to print. These things are pretty
expensive and I'm pissed off at having to replace one that's more than
half full. Has anyone got any hints and tips?

If you've only been using it lightly, chances are the ink nozzlea are
blocked and it needs the heads removing and cleaning properly. Ink is
water based so when it dries out, it leaves a powder behind which
knackers stuff up.

Also, ink cartridges have a use by date as well - they don't last
indefinitely.

Since you've tried cleaning (PDF page 144), then I suppose trying
another cartridge is another option.

I notice one of the people commenting to the article, mentioned
that his red color was gone completely, and that procedure
fixed it. Amazing.
That sounds like a solution, but I'm too physically disabled to
attempt it myself, so I'll call HP tomorrow. I took all three colour
cartridges out to clean the plastic windows, and now the red and blue
cartridges are signalling only 11% full from the 71% they were showing
last night. Red still won't work and all three colour cartridges show
"Pages printed 537". Yellow still shows 71% full.

So, to continue the saga...
HP offered to come to my place and replace the printer for 180 UKP. As
far as I know the design fault on the 2605 has not been fixed and it
was withdrawn from marketing at the end of last year. So, they're
going to replace my non-functioning 2605 with another that has the
same fault built in so that I get the same problem in two years? For
only £180? Some deal.

Does anyone know if the newer printer, CP1510, has the same problem?

Incidentally, if anyone in England wants to motor over to Herts they
are welcome to the 2605. It will go to the recycling centre
otherwise.
