HP 24" wide color printer black is blue

I forget the model number but this is a big 24" wide HP 4-color plotter
about 3 years old and the ink is that old too (bought used). Blacks are
coming out banded blue, even just straight black linework. Does that
just mean the black cartridge is shot or has the old black ink turned blue?

It's a Designjet 500 & the inks & heads expired in 2003.

I doubt the black ink has turned blue; more likely the print mode is
either generating black from CM&Y or is underprinting the black with
cyan for a darker black.

Try printing a diagnostic test as shown at:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...cc=us&objectID=bpp03049&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

This test should show which inks are working and what needs attention.

Thanks, I see the printhead cleaning is hidden in the troubleshooting
routine. There is also a 'true black' mode that eliminates the blue.
