I am a software developer working on creating the install for my
program. During the install, I need to add my application to the list
of the firewall's exceptions list. How do I go about doing that?

What application are you trying to write? Why does it need free reign
through the firewall?

Heck - built in Windows XP SP2 tools can add to the firewall from the
command prompt...

netsh firewall set

Research it - Google. ;-)

Maybe because it is a server? Believe it or not there are
applications that do serve information to other programs and there are
people that write such programs for legitimate reasons.

I tried, I just did not konw what to look for, until you clued me in,
