Sound on my P4P800D picked up interference from inside the case, a constant
background "ticking" and also buzzing whenever I moved my PS/2-connected
mouse. I checked the grounding of the board and even experimented by
temporarily running a ground wire from a MB mounting screw to a screw on the
PS housing. This didn't help, but it's always possible that the entire
circuit feeding my system has a ground problem. I say this because I didn't
come across other reports of audio noise specific to the P4P800D. Anyway,
the noise was barely noticeable through speakers, but so annoying through
headphones that I disabled it and installed a card (M-Audio Revolution 7.1).
I didn't really expect to gain anything but elimination of the noise, but
the sound quality of the card is noticeably much better, even to my
non-audiophile ears, than the onboard audio for listening to MP3's and
watching TV on my All-in-Wonder card. I don't play games so can't comment on
the audio quality for that.
I think that if you are not an audiophile and don't experience noise
interference like I did, then the audio on the P4P800D would likely be good
enough for you. You can always add a card if it isn't.
The only reservation I have about my P4P800D, which I've had for 6 months,
is disappointing disk performance under Windows XP, which is a widely
reported observation. Drive-to-drive copies, especially of large files, are
annoyingly slow. XP SP2 this summer (?) is supposed to fix that issue from
what I've read. You'll find more on this in the disk drive issue forum at
www.asusboards.com. In general, the forums there are more active than this
newsgroup and get into more detailed discussions.
