How's Avast's updates?

I'm getting tired of the way it's so hard to get AVG's update feature
to work. Either their server is overloaded or maybe they shut it down
during certain parts of the day. Nonetheless, about 2/3 of the time
I'm unable to update my signature file because I can't connect.

How well does the Avast update feature work? Any comments?

TIA

nagware, shareware, spyware, time-limited software, trialware, viruses
or warez please.

My 98se machine updates itself automatically, sometimes several times a
week. No problems
My xp has to be updated when I remember to do so. Just done it now. Thanks
for the reminder. No problems

John,

this is a copy of a solution that solved the problem for me. It was
posted by "Doc" in a reply to an earlier AVG download problem post.

"Open the file url.ini located in your AVG folder. It may look similiar
to
this ..

[SERVER_NAME]
1=free.grisoft.cz

[SERVER_URL]
1=http://free.grisoft.cz/softw/60/fe
Actual URL=1

If you add extra lines so that it looks like this ...

[SERVER_NAME]
1=free.grisoft.cz
2=ftp.grisoft.com
3=www.grisoft.com

[SERVER_URL]
1=http://free.grisoft.cz/softw/60/fe
2=ftp.grisoft.com/pub/softw/60/fe/
3=http://www.grisoft.com/softw/60/fe/
Actual URL=3

then you will have the choice of any of those 3 servers for downloads."

**the original post had the last line as "Actual URL=1" but was corrected
by another poster (CalamityKen) to "Actual URL=3".

Thanks to both posters because I now have no problems connecting.

This worked for me as well. Now I am able to quickly and easily update AVG
any time that I want too.

It also worked for me. I have had no problems since. In fact, now
it's faster.

I would imagine that in the near future grisoft will alter the programming
to stop using the other servers.The extra servers (ww.grisoft.cz and com)
were taken out last year ,to give better bandwidth service to paying
customers of the pro version.The fix you used has been around since last
year but is now being posted more publicly so i assume that eventually
grisoft will either upgrade their servers or alter the avg free programming
to stop use of the servers .I can tell you that avast works fine as a main
scanner with avg as a secondary on demand scanner on a w98 machine.Just
disable the boot up scanner and the AVG control centre /reident shield.Even
though control centre is disabled you can still update defs fine and perform
on demand scanning.

Until such time as we have all made the changes, then it will be like
stirring treacle again :-(

Thanks, Bassbag. Guess I'll use AVG for the time being, at least until
they do like you say they might. Then I'll most likely go the route
you suggest.
