This may sound stupid, but how do you start XP in safe
mode tried ctrl but doesnt work. Any clues.

Hi,

Hit F8 as the POST ends and Windows starts.

If you can't get it to work, start/run msconfig from normal mode. Go to the
boot.ini tab and enable the /safeboot option. You will need to undo this
when you are done working in Safe mode in order to restart normally.

Hit F8 when a white bar starts progressing at the bottom of your screen. It
will take u to Advance Boot Options Screen and then u can select Safemode
from there. The time u have to hit F8 is really less, so you need to make
sure u hit it as soon as u see the white bar.
