how would i know if i've got a worm or two?

Receiving suspect Emails is not the problem.
What you do with them after you receive them is the problem.

Do you have an up to date anti virus you run regularly?
Do you keep current on Windows Updates?
do you have a properly configured firewall?
If no to the above, you may have a worm, and possibly much more.
