The cause

Right now we don't have official word on a cause, but one source with
familiarity with WGA tells us that the issue may be caused by updates to the
service that were required after Microsoft expanded the number of
activations keys available for Windows XP. *However, the sense we get from
Phil Liu is that Microsoft is pretty much in the dark right now.

*Heheheheheh, nowt new there then.

Complete instructions for the fix are here:

We also implemented a webpage with special instructions that will receive
any traffic from systems that are running on product keys that could have
been affected by this issue.

I guess I should have searched for additional information before I posted.

Bob - could you or someone else, please, just spell this out in the simplest
possible language? I've read those items, but I'm not completely clear about
the situation. Are we all supposed to apply the fix? Or only those folk
who've had WGA register them as non-genuine? And do I take it that we would
know if that were the case?

Thanks, Alan

thank goodness they fixed this, I am waiting for 2 brand new notebooks from
Dell, one refurbished running xp sp2 and one running vista home preimum.
One is coming some time this week and the other is suppose to be shipped
next week.--duh!
I would have been real upset if I could not validate both new computers then
wait till MS fixed this before giving it to my customers.
