How was this done....

I saw an Excel 2000 worksheet where something mysterious happened. After
entering data in a cell, the following cell, which started out blank,
suddenly had a formula in it (just like the cell above it). I looked for
macros but there were none. I don't know what triggered the event (tho, I
suspect it happened when I exited the first cell after leaving data in it)
and how the formula was produced (altho I suspect it was copied from the
cell above). How would you accomplish that?

I suspect that both cells were selected and you pressed Ctrl + Enter.

this is a feature. See 'Tool - Options - Edit' (not sure about the
translation but it should be the upper right checkbox in this dialog)
