I have a W98 machine w/dialout.
With Norton 2001 I could set it so that it would only look for updates
once a week. That way, the computer would not try to connect to the
internet (and trigger a dialout) every time I booted the PC.

Norton 2001 is now obsolete, and I installed NAV 2005. I've turned off
the auto-update (I'll invoke it manually myself), but on boot, the
ccapp process is part of startup and appears to try to access the
internet. I know disabling ccapp via msconfig/uncheck-in-Startup
breaks NAV.

Is there some way to configure NAV so that it can startup yet not try
and access the internet? I don't see much in the Options.

Uninstalling NAV usually works - and speeds up the PC!

Seriously, NAV is a huge drain on a Win9x PC's resources, and almost any
other AV is likely to produce better results.

You're a luser for buying/using NAV 2005, especially on a W98 machine.

That copy of NAV 2001 you have actually works just fine. You simply
need to un-install it, delete all NAV program files and directories,
and re-install it. You'd end up with another year of AV updates.

Thanks Noel and VG. I installed AVG, but I couldn't shut down the
machine. Avast! didn't seem to work, so I only went w/NAV as a last
resort.

I may try to reinstall NAV 2001, but I had the product and sometime
this summer got the message that it was no longer supported w/updates.

Really, it should be a simple matter to prevent NAV/ccapp from trying
to connect to the internet on its own during startup. I'm currently
looking into the Control Panel / LiveUpdate settings. Maybe by
disabling all the entries will keep this boy silent. Still, who
programs this stuff? More and more it appears that companies don't
care to give users the kind of control that they might need.

What's odd is that sometimes the computer comes up clean w/o dialout.
It appears to be for power-ups after the first one for the day.

I haven't had NAV 2001 running on a machine now for maybe 6-9 months,
but I'd be surprised if Symantec was blocking updates for it.

When re-installing NAV 2001/2002, you ->must<- delete the program
completely from the hard drive (where-ever they may be located).
That's after you un-install it from the add/remove list.

When you re-install, and perform all updates, you will start the clock
on another year of updates.

I would think that NAV 01/02 would be easier to "tame" as far as
trying to initiate a connection to the internet on system start-up.
There are options for "check for updates" (or automatic updates) and
"alert me if my definitions are out of date". Turn those off, and I
doubt that it will "phone-home" when starting.

The fact that you've already installed NAV 2005 may complicate your
ability to successfully re-install NAV 2001. You may have a hard time
removing all traces of NAV 2005 (but NAV 2001 may not care...)
