I am trying to work up a fairly simple 5 x 7 two page document in Word.
It has imported graphics and a colored background.

How do I import a drawing without it being too small while the "frame"
around it is way too large?

How do I get the background color to not bollix the formatting? And
print in color?

This is a fault of the graphic. If it is copy/pasted from the web, the
creator has probably included a white area around the graphic so that text
wraps around it a uniform distance from the graphic. You either need to crop
the graphic in a graphics editor first or use Word's crop tool to crop it in
Word.

The background colour is purely for an HTML background and it won't print
from a document unless you create and save it to HTML. I'm not sure what you
mean by bollix the formatting though: the background colour setting has no
other affect on Word other than colour the background. What problems are you
having? At a guess, the text is changing colour? If you have the text set to
automatic, then Word will choose the colour opposite the background colour.

Thanks for responding. The graphic is stuff I made. I don't know how to
edit it as you suggest....

The color problem is that as soon as I set a background color, my two
page format vanishes. And I can't get the color to print.
 
I now wonder how you are adding a coloured background. Are you using Format,
Background, Fill or some other method? If you are using Format, Background,
Fill the background will not print as it is only for making HTML (web)
pages. I don't quite understand how this will be affecting your page format
as it is only a background. You'll need to be more specific.

For the graphics, after you have inserted the graphic, select it and the
Picture Toolbar should open (if it doesn't open, use View, Toolbars and
check the Picture Toolbar). One of the Tools is the CROP Tool. With the
graphics selected, click on the CROP tool. Now you will see the crop
anchors: use the mouse to move the crop anchors so that there is no white
space around the graphic.
