sDNSI am new to Windows XP so this Networking is very confusing.

How does one "A Home User" properly set up Windows XP. I do use those
Messengers with the Web Cam [Hotmail & Yahoo, etc.] but what excatly does one
need and have to have setup?

I do not know what a TCP/IP address is or how one gets the proper one. What
is DHCP and in the TCP Advance , it has tabs identified as DNS, Wins, "with
option od enabling LMHOST and something about some NetBIOS enabling it of
TCP/IP or soething of that sort and then there is and additional Tab label
Options.

My Internet provider is Sympatico which I am getting more and more
disatisfied with.

Please, will someone tell me how to setup my connetion properly. I do have
DSL connection. Oh, What about the QoS Packet Scheduler? Does one "A single
Home User" really need all of those items; QoS , Microsoft Networks, Printer
and File Sharring, etc.?

I just surf the net, E-mail individuals, Web CAm Video Messaging. I do not
have any other computer hooked up in the home to the Internet to be
classified as a Network. Thanks for your patients and advice or dorection.
Thank you.

DNS -- Domain Name services -- translates Internet IP addresses
(127.0.0.1) to "human" readable web site names (www.symaptico.ca)
LMHOST - Same as DNS (above) but a "local" file is doing the translate
(on you PC.)

TCP/IP -- Abbreviation of Transmission Control Protocol / Internet
Protocol -- method of letting PCs "talk" to each other over cables,
Internet and wireless adapters.

NetBIOS -- Short for Network Basic Input Output System, an API that
augments the networking by adding special functions for local-area
networks. Generally "not required" for general Internet access.

TCP/IP address -- Internet acess "number" similar to a telephone
number. (ex: 127.0.0.1)

DHCP -- Dynamic Host Control Protocol -- service provided by some
device/software to give out IP address to PCs that request one.

WINS -- Short for Windows Internet Naming Service, a system that
determines the IP address associated with a particular network
computer.

If you are using Sympatico, you do not have to configure/change any of
these setting. Sympatico provides method/software to set these up.
-----------------------------------------
QoS Scheduler / QoS , Microsoft Networks, Printer and File Sharring
are usually used to set up a home network (more than one PC sharing
Internet access.)
These are usally "default" settings that Microsoft has included in
XP. Yoy do not have to do any settings.

As for setting up a Single PC onto the DSL Internet, to be correctly
set up you need: anti-virus and firewall software. Anti-virus
software to protect from the viruses that are found on the Internet
and firewall software to "block" un-authorized access, from the
Internet, to your PC.

As for Web CAM settings in the differement Messenging system, each
Messenger (MSN/Hotmail and Yahoo) has its ouwn options to control
this,

Also, if you hve an other questions about the Networking "terms" and
Internet configurations, you should try using Internet Search engines
(www.live.com or www.google.ca) first. There are several web sites
that can help to "explain" the answers in greater details.
