First you go to SYSTEM PROPERTIES & select updates. Change it to "download
but let me decide when to install"
When a message pops up & tells you that updates are ready to install, click
the message.
On that window you can select a choice which I forget but basically it says
to let you decide which ones you allow.
In the next window de-select the mungrel you are having trouble with & then
click INSTALL. Tell it to never ask me for that update again. (please!)
I guess it is maybe the one that checks for genuine windows? Don't let that
one in........ Grrrr! lol.

How to view the Update log in Windows:-

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type: %windir%\windowsupdate.log
and then click OK.

Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate the
error code(s) associated with the latest failed attempt to
download/install. If appropriate copy and paste the error codes
into this thread so someone may be able to assist you. On the other
hand, you may be able to find the error code and other suggestions
by searching the Newsgroup.
Also check Windows folder for file called KB******.log (****** =
number of update ie KB896688) and post the contents of the failed
update.

This may provide further clues as to why the update failed.

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file:

Do a manual update. I.E. Click on windows update. Click custom button. When
that update appears select 'do not show this update again'.

this is where I get confounded as there is no way to 'do not show this
update again'. the update is shown as GWAdvantage___I have no problem with
this update___but when it is downloaded it is not shown as GWAdvantage it is
shown as 816093: Security Update Microsoft Virtual Machine (Microsoft VM)
and will be overwritten ___I have stopped all auto updates as It seems so
unreal

When doing a manual update, Do NOT download the one you don't want. Select
it, page down a little and click 'do not show this update again'. Then, back
out and do not download it.
