please provide directions on how to zip a ppt file so that it is small enough
to e-mail colleagues.

You can use any compression application available to create a .zip file.
Most will have settings to the amount of compression desired. Basically the
higher the compression level, the smaller the file, but the longer it takes
to uncompress (unzip).

The amount of compress is dramatically impacted by the content of your
presentation. Text, charts and autoshapes will compress up to 95% while
images will compress only 10-15%.

You might want to try PFC Express from PFC Media. It is made to make it
easy to email PPT files, and it is free. Check it out here:

You can try WinZIP, among others. www.winzip.com is the URL, I'm pretty sure

But for all practical purposes, the information inside PPT files is already
compressed quite well. Winzip won't shrink the files all that much.

You'll want to start by trying some of the suggestions here:

Why are my PowerPoint files so big? What can I do about it?
