I need to write a number of indexed characters in a piece of writing.
For instance, when someone says "4 to the power of 2" and the 2 is
smaller and slightly raised above the 4. i just don't know how to do it
though. Can anyone help?

TIA

Select the 2 and press Ctrl+Shift+= or go to Format | Font and check the box
for Superscript.

Those are called superscripts.

Type the 4, then press Ctrl-Shift-+ all together. Type the 2. Press
Ctrl-Shift-+ again to return to norm typing.
