how to validate a date and phone field value

I am trying to validate that the user input for date and phone #s are
correct. I'm using the inputmask already. But if user doesn't complete the
field values I want to trap the error so you do not see the MS error. Is
there a function that checks the value ie ISDATE or something? Thanks for
any help!
