Hi, we have a s3 savage4 video card working on windows 2000. Unfortunetly s3
driver for windows 2000/xp isnt very good so we would like to use the driver
that comes with windowsxp installation disk on windows 2000.
My question is, how can i extract that driver from the installation cd? Is
it possible?

Thanks

'windows 2000/xp isnt very good'
'use the driver that comes with windowsxp installation'
A bit of double dutch???????
Perhaps the drivers direct from the card manu.site might help.

No, he's saying the driver direct from the manufacturer isn't as
good as the canned Win2K driver. I've seen this myself on
occasion with other hardware...

The process would be something like this:

1. Make sure you have a full system backup in case of problems.

2. Uninstall the existing S3 driver. When prompted to reboot,
do NOT do so.

3. Find and either rename or delete the manufacturer's .INF file
in \winnt\inf. This is a bit dicey -- make sure the file you're
renaming or deleting is the correct one.

4. Shut down completely (power off), wait a minute and then
reboot. Win2K should search for and install its built-in S3 driver.

I have samekind of problem with S3 Savage/IX on HP laptop. I tried your tips
but it still loaded S3 driver somehow (or maybe i did something wrong).

I tried some time XP on this same laptop and "microsoft default driver" (or
something like that worked fine. It didn't have all properties but for games
it was OK.

So, if I do your instructions right I get this "Microsoft default driver" or
something else? Can I install it some how from "XP install-cd"?

The driver, included on the win cd, will be the same as *a* driver from the
card manu.site.
As the manu. may have produced numerous versions its down to trial to locate
one that is suitable.
You could try a newsgroup appropriate to yr card manu. for any feedback on
specific drivers
