Ok, I know how to encryp and decrypt folders and files,
but I don't understand how that offers protection since
anyone who should take over or steel my computer could see
the files or decrypt them just like I can. Please explain.

They could only access the EFS encrypted folder/files if the user or recovery agent
private keys are still on the computer. W2K will have a recovery agent and XP
probably will not. You can export the certificate with the option to export the
private key and also delete it as part of the export process. You should have backup
copies of your private key for yourself also or you may lose your data permanently if
you have a system crash or profile corruption. --- Steve
