I'm wondering how to awaken my computer from standby or hibernation mode? i'm
not too computer savvy, and i need to learn this one thing badly.

I,
Mouse or keyboard action will bring your PC out of standby mode,
hibernation will require a restart as it shuts your PC down after saving
your data. See power saving in Control Panel

While on standby, your entire computer switches to a low-power state
where devices, such as the monitor and hard disks, turn off and your
computer uses less power. When you want to use the computer again, it
comes out of standby quickly, and your desktop is restored exactly as
you left it. Standby is particularly useful for conserving battery power
in portable computers. Because Standby does not save your desktop state
to disk, a power failure while on Standby can cause you to lose unsaved
information.

The hibernate feature saves everything in memory on disk, turns off your
monitor and hard disk, and then turns off your computer. When you
restart your computer, your desktop is restored exactly as you left it.
It takes longer to bring your computer out of hibernation than out of
standby.

In standby mode your pc will 'come alive' simply by moving the mouse
In hibernation you have to physically turn your pc on as normal the only
difference is that it will boot quicker to the desktop because it has saved
a copy of your system 'as you left it' to the hard drive.

I personally use standby for short periods when i am away from the pc for
half an hour or so. Anything over that an i use hibernate. I also use
hibernate to close down at the end of the day. However, i make a point of
closing the pc down fully, ie. shutdown, every few days.
