That option is for use with double-byte character sets such as Japanese. "Full
width" forms are two bytes each, which "half width" forms are only one byte.
When the option is checked, the characters in a single search term will match
both full width and half width forms of the same letter (something similar to
clearing the Match Case option). When it is cleared, a half width character will
match only the same half width character, and full width matches only full
width.

If you don't have a double-byte language installed, the option has no effect.

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HP052510351033.aspx mentions it.
