I'm using the contact folder note that is created when you create the contact
to
hold invoice payment information: date paid, invoice #, amount, etc. At one
point I could search by using keystrokes alt e-f, as you use in other
microsoft programs. Now I have to click the find menu. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you are now using a different version of Outlook than before, but
you forgot to tell us which one.

Microsoft Office Outlook 2007. It was just in a two day period. One day I'm
using the feature and the next I can't. I'm sure it must be something I did.
When I use the alt-ef to find now it goes to the "file as" name of the
contact.

Use CTRL+E to bring up Instant Search (although it should already be at the
top of your Contacts view). Type your search criteria directly into the box,
or click the double down arrow to the right of the search box to bring up
additional search criteria.
