How to upgrade to DirectX 8

If I type Start/Run/Dxdiag, the screen shows I'm using DirectX
4.09.00.0904 (with my W2K Professional, SP4). I went to Microsoft and
downloaded a file called DX81NTeng.exe, 7,751KB, that's supposed to
upgrade to v8. It installed without no apparent problems, but when I
went again to Dxdiag, it continued to show the old version of 4.09, even
after restarting the computer.

Any ideas for making the upgrade work?

Thanks,

Ray

can't you uninstall 4 first

I never thought to do that. I went to Control Panel/Add Remove Programs,
but couldn't find DirectX listed with the other programs or as Windows
component. So how would I do that?

It cannot be uninstalled by regualar means, there are no methods
provided by Microsoft for unistalling DirectX. If you upgrade the
current version the same will apply to the new version, you will not be
able to uninstall or roll it back to the earlier version. You can try
DirectX Buster http://www.dxbuster.de/index_e.shtml

Andy,

New problem: before I can download v9c, I have to run something called
Genuine Check. When I do, I get this: "genuinecheck.exe is not a valid
win32 application." I did not have to use genuine check when attempting
to install DX8. Besides, I'd really like to know why I couldn't install v8.

The issue of upgrading arose because of a billiards game I'm playing.
Its stated system requirements are DX8, but even though I'm only at
version 4, the game plays perfectly. So maybe I should just leave well
enough alone.

I thought that I had the same problem with DirectX as you did. Using the
DirectX Diagnostic tool, I show that I have ver. 9.0c but it shows in
parentheses that it's version 4.09.0000.0904. You do have the right version
installed if you are seeing the same thing.

Good catch!

Where DXdiag says DirectX version, all I see is the 4.09.00.0904,
without any parenthesis.

Odd thing, another computer with the same version of W2K Pro, installed
from the same CD, shows v8. Perhaps the upgrade is a result of one of
the many updates/hotfixes, although both computers should have the same
updates/hotfixes. Both have SP4.

Perhaps the official "Version Number" is taken from the " 09 " part?
